David Smotrich & Partners LLP prepared a Program Study as well as provided a full design, construction documents, specifications, and construction administration for the complete $28,000,000 renovation of Nathan Hale Hall. The building not only had large quantities of asbestos, spalling concrete and interior leaks but was also academically defunct for today’s technology based learning environment. The use of a large double height central atrium with skylights and two story glass curtain walls centered on either side of the building visually opened the building to the rest of the campus. This space was originally a dark, concrete, one story pedestrian throughway. Our team was responsible for exterior renovation of the building as well as the sidewalks and the surrounding landscape. The concept was simple yet elegant, economical, and 100% ADA compliant. Nathan Hale Hall was published by American University Magazine for outstanding design and interior renovation. The project achieved Silver LEED Certification. Important Aspects of the Projects Include: Asbestos removal, ADA compliance, New roof, Laboratories, Classrooms, Greenhouse, Boardroom, Lobby, Restrooms, Art Studio, Parking lot Repair, Window replacement, complete HVAC system and electrical replacement.
