The new Student Lounge at the Fashion Institute of Technology is a complete renovation of the former “pizza parlor” on Campus. New carpeted areas with soft seating, new lighting, sound absorptive curved ceilings, a computer “bar” and a new sound system are some of the attributes for this space. The corridor wall is glass to allow more visibility and borrowed light. The seating arrangements vary, as does a portable stage to allow for stand up comedy, poetry slam, and chaired meetings. Green building design uses cutting edge radio frequency for light switching, recycled materials, no voc paint, LED lighting and polished concrete.

Specific Techniques Employed:

  1. Sustainable elements – No VOC from carpet or paint, polished concrete majority of floor.
  2. Use of glazing for borrowed light to brighten the space with low energy use fixtures.
  3. All furniture on state contract.
  4. Armstrong wave ceiling design for sound absorption; attention grabbing ceiling elements and associated lighting.
  5. The Architects employed 3D computer modeling to allow the client to “walk-though” the new space prior to design completion.
